Inertial sensor DAT WXYZ

The inertial sensor DAT WXYZ it is installed on the buckets that carry out the excavation of the diaphragms. The sensor measures and records the following parameters:

  • inclination (measured by a biaxial tilt sensor);
  • deviation (calculated from the inclination and depth measured by an external sensor);
  • rotation (measured by an internal compass).

The measured data is recorded in real time on an internal memory. The DAT WXYZ inertial sensor connects via radio to a PC or to the JET DSP 100 / D datalogger. Its casing is very resistant and also waterproof: it is in fact made of delrin and stainless steel.

WXYZ DAT, installation

The DAT WXYZ inertial sensor is installed on the bents that dig the diaphragm walls. The diagram, shown below, shows the installation of the inertial sensor, along with the other components that make up the system. In addition to the data measured by the WXYZ DAT inertial sensor, other data (e.g. depth) is also required, measured by additional sensors. The deviation of the excavation is a derived datum, being calculated starting from the depth and inclination.

Dat WXYZ inertial sensor, the project

I took care of all the components of the inertial sensor: the design of the electronic board, the development of the microprocessor firmware, the definition of the communication protocols and also the design of the casing.

Internal electronic card, schematic design and unraveling of the mainboard printed circuit board, which has the following characteristics:

  • central microprocessor;
  • biaxial tilt sensor;
  • electronic compass;
  • 1 eeprom SPI memory bank;
  • separate power stages, switching and linear;
  • LiPo battery stage: power and charging;
  • energy saving, automatic switching on and off;
  • wireless connectivity for transmission of recorded data;
  • Status LED.

Microprocessor firmware: development of all the functions necessary to operate all the components and sensors of the mainboard, implementation of communication protocols, and also programming of features for energy saving.

Casing: Mechanical design of durable casing, waterproof.

Programming language: Assembler.
