C64 FUN-NEST: retro innovation

In the world of retrocomputing, modern interfaces and innovations allow us to breathe new life into our beloved vintage computers. During Varese RetroComputing 2024, a reference event for fans of historical technologies, I interviewed Lorenzo Bolla, creator of the C64 FUN-NEST: a revolutionary multifunctional interface designed for the Commodore 64 and the Commodore SX-64.

This innovative cartridge represents a major step forward in the fusion of modern technologies and vintage systems, offering advanced functionality through the use of FPGAs, ESP32 and Raspberry Pi Zero.

Technical characteristics of the C64 FUN-NEST

The C64 FUN-NEST is a state-of-the-art cartridge that integrates numerous features into a single compact device. Below, a detailed overview of its key features:

  • Xilinx Spartan 3A-DSP FPGA: heart of the programmable logic that manages hardware emulation;
  • ESP32 and Raspberry Pi Zero: Used for additional processing and connection management;
  • Buttons, LEDs and OLED displays: allow an intuitive user interface to configure settings and monitor the status of the cartridge;
  • CRT cartridge emulation: Load games and software in seconds, eliminating traditional long loading times;
  • Floppy drive emulation: with connection to the IEC port, the C64 FUN-NEST replaces the classic floppy disk drives allowing you to load digital files (e.g. downloaded from the internet) without the use of physical media;
  • Modem functionality via Wi-Fi: using the User Port, the cartridge emulates a modem to connect to BBS (Bulletin Board Systems), evoking the experience of the first digital networks: in the video we connect to the RetroCampus BBS and browse... on my website www.valoroso.it!
  • 2MB of RAM and 2MB of flash memory: allow you to manage hardware expansions and complex software content;
  • Compatibility with Commodore 64 and SX-64: the cartridge can be perfectly integrated with both systems. In addition, future compatibility with the ZX Spectrum via adapter is planned.
  • Stand-alone mode: in the absence of the Commodore 64, the cartridge can emulate arcade hardware such as the classic Pac-Man, with VGA video output to connect to more modern monitors.

An open source project for the retrocomputing community

One of the most interesting aspects of the C64 FUN-NEST is its open source nature. Lorenzo Bolla has chosen to share wiring diagrams and software templates, inviting the community of enthusiasts to contribute to the improvement and expansion of the cartridge's functionality. This collaborative approach allows users to develop further applications, transforming the C64 FUN-NEST into a versatile and dynamic platform.

A multifunctional interface that simplifies retro gaming

During the interview at Varese RetroComputing 2024, Lorenzo Bolla showed how the C64 FUN-NEST manages to replace several traditional devices, improving the user experience of vintage computers. With a single cartridge, you can emulate:

  • CRT cartridges, loading games and programs quickly;
  • Floppy disk drive, eliminating the need for physical drives;
  • Modem, allowing connection to BBS via Wi-Fi.

The ability to upload files from the internet and connect to BBSs via Wi-Fi modem demonstrates how this interface is designed to adapt to modern needs, while maintaining the retro spirit of the Commodore 64 and SX-64.
